The company should not automatically assume that its Tamil Nadu GSTIN covers the Karnataka establishment.<\/p>\r\n

Where registration is required in the second State, the business would need to obtain the applicable GST registration there.<\/p>\r\n

The two registrations would have separate GSTINs because GSTINs are State-specific.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Does Every Office in Another State Need a Separate GSTIN?<\/h2>\r\n

This is where businesses need to distinguish between another location within the same State<\/strong> and a location in another State<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

For locations within the same State, the GST Portal provides for an Additional Places of Business<\/strong> section. Therefore, a branch, warehouse or other business location in the same State may be included as an additional place rather than automatically requiring another GSTIN.<\/p>\r\n

A business location in another State is different because GST registration is State\/UT based.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When the same business has more than one GST registration, including registrations across different States, GST law treats the registrations as distinct persons for GST purposes.<\/p>\r\n

This can affect how transactions between registrations are handled.<\/p>\r\n

For example, suppose the same company has GST registrations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.<\/p>\r\n

Even though the company itself is the same legal entity, its GST registrations are treated separately for GST purposes. Transactions between the registrations therefore need to be examined under GST rules rather than being treated automatically like an internal movement with no GST implications.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

What About an Online Business?<\/h2>\r\n

An online business should not decide its GST registration<\/a> requirement solely based on where customers are located.<\/p>\r\n
