Freelancing platforms can help Indian professionals find international customers, manage projects and receive payments. But using a platform does not automatically decide the GST treatment of the service.<\/p>\r\nThe key question is not just which platform processed the payment. It is who receives the service, what the contract says and whether the relevant GST conditions are satisfied.\r\n

Who is the recipient of the service?<\/h2>\r\nDepending on the platform\u2019s terms and the specific arrangement, the freelancer may provide services directly to a customer, work through an agency or have another contractual relationship. The platform may act as a marketplace, payment facilitator, contracting party or provide other services.\r\n\r\nRead the relevant terms, customer agreement and invoices. Do not assume that the person who sends the money is always the legal recipient of the underlying service.\r\n

Does platform income count towards turnover?<\/h2>\r\nA freelancer should calculate aggregate turnover according to the GST definition and the actual supplies made. Platform deductions and payment-processing fees should be recorded separately where relevant. Do not automatically use only the net bank deposit as the complete measure of the transaction.\r\n

What about GST on platform fees?<\/h2>\r\nThe platform may charge fees or supply services to the freelancer. The GST treatment of those fees is a separate question from the treatment of the freelancer\u2019s services to customers. If the platform or another supplier is located outside India, the freelancer may need to examine whether any reverse-charge or other provisions apply.\r\n\r\nDo not assume that every platform fee is treated identically. Review the invoice, supplier location, nature of the service and current rules.\r\n

What records should be maintained?<\/h2>\r\nKeep platform statements, customer invoices, contracts, proof of work, payment records and details of fees deducted.
